AI File Viewer: Illustrator 1.1.2.8 Release Notes
We are pleased to share the updates introduced in AI File Viewer: Illustrator version 1.1.2.8. Following our 1.1.1.4 release notes, this release adds PDF layer controls for layered vector files, flexible editing for markup shapes, two new interface languages, and new menu options.
PDF Layers for AI and PDF Files
You can now view and manage layers in AI and PDF files that contain layer data. When you open a PDF-compatible AI file or a PDF document with layers (Optional Content Groups), a layer icon appears on the top bar. For PDF documents, tap the overflow menu (⋮) and select "Layers" to open the sheet.
Viewing the layer list is free for all users. This allows you to inspect the structure of a multi-layer design file directly on your mobile device. Several layer tools are available with Plus:
- Show or hide layers: Tap the eye icon next to a layer name to toggle its visibility on screen, helping you inspect specific parts of your design.
- Change layer color: Select a layer to apply a new color. When you save or share, the app exports a transparent PNG image. The original file is not modified.
- Save a single layer as PNG: Long-press a layer in the sheet and choose "Save this layer as PNG" to export that specific layer separately.
This feature functions in the same way as the layer tools in PSD & PSB File Viewer.
Please keep in mind the following details documented in the app:
- Only top-level layers appear in the list. Sublayers and nested groups toggle together with their parent top-level layer.
- Encrypted PDF files do not display a layer list.
- Files larger than 256 MB do not support visibility toggling or layer PNG exports, though the layer list remains visible.
- The "Save as PDF" function exports the original document rather than the toggled visibility state.
- If an AI file has zero layers or only one top-level layer, the layer icon appears dimmed, and the sheet explains why. Color adjustment remains available even when only one top-level layer is present.
Markup and Shape Editing Improvements
Reviewing artwork can require adjusting notes and callouts. Drawn shapes can now be modified after placement on the canvas.
Tap a shape to select it, then move it across the canvas, resize it using corner and endpoint handles, or delete it. Unselected rectangles and ellipses can be selected by tapping inside their boundary. When a smaller shape is positioned inside a larger shape, tapping selects the smaller shape, while dragging moves the larger shape.
A guidance hint now appears when opening shape tools for the first time. In addition, markup layout alignment has been corrected for right-to-left languages.
French and Indonesian Language Support
AI File Viewer: Illustrator now supports French and Indonesian. Combined with the 9 languages from version 1.1.1.4 (English, Korean, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, Japanese, German, Vietnamese, and Traditional Chinese), the app interface is now available in 11 languages.
To choose your preferred language, open the drawer menu and tap "Language". The list displays options in an "English name : Native name" format and includes a search bar so you can find your language quickly.
New Menu Items
The side drawer menu includes three new entries to make navigation and maintenance easier:
- Rate App: Opens the store review screen directly. Automatic rating prompts are limited to at most two times over the life of the app, spaced at least 90 days apart. If you open the store review page through this menu item, the app will not display automatic rating prompts.
- Check for Updates: Checks directly from the menu whether a newer app version is available.
- Language: Opens the language selection screen.
Additional Improvements
We have made several further refinements across the app:
- Drawer menu navigation: A close (X) button has been added to the drawer menu, and the list of other apps can now be collapsed for a cleaner screen.
- Purchase verification: Plus purchases are verified more reliably, including cases where confirmation takes longer.
- Feature tier adjustments: Saving or sharing the current page as a PNG image, as well as swipe previews between files, are now Plus features. Sharing the original file remains free.
Free and Plus Features
Here is an overview of what is included in AI File Viewer: Illustrator:
